"It's very difficult". This is how senior Foreign Affairs officials define Spain's options to regain representation on the UN Security Council. With less than a year to go until the United Nations election, the ministry estimates that “many votes must be overcome” with respect to Turkey, which obtained a lot of support in New York last September. As El Confidencial Digital has learned , the Government recognizes that, in recent months, the Ottoman country has obtained international credit that Spain has lost in two very sensitive forums: the United Nations General Assembly held in New York and, in To a lesser extent, the failed bid for the 2020 Olympic Games. On both fronts, “Turkey has proven to be ahead in obtaining support.” Spain's more passive strategy has caused " some of the votes that we had agreed upon to be lost , and now we have to fight to recover them." Indeed, as reported in these pages , Spain had an advantage over Turkey a few months ago. The second vacancy was 'reserved' for New Zealand, the Ottoman country presented itself as the greatest rival. However, the revolts in Istanbul and the support of South American countries seemed to tip the balance in favor of Spanish interests.

The meetings of the Turkish foreign minister in New York The sources consulted by ECD explain that a large part of Turkey's 'comeback' was forged a month and a half ago, when the United Nations General Assembly was held in New York. During the days in  Phone Number List which the Assembly lasted, "Spain lost a great opportunity to seek new alliances and consolidate the agreed support", while the Turkish Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, 'moved' to obtain a large number of votes . Specifically, some of the members of the Spanish delegation in New York remember the absence of José Manuel García-Margallo at a breakfast with his counterparts from island states, among whom were representatives of the so-called 'Micronesia' (islands in the Pacific Ocean , some dependent on the United States). In that meeting, which Davutoglu did attend, Turkey obtained “between 12 and 15 votes for the election of the vacancy for the UN Security Council,” say the sources consulted. [OBJECT] Bloomberg's interview with Rajoy Margallo's absence from the aforementioned breakfast was justified by the minister due to Bloomberg's interview with Mariano Rajoy . The Foreign Minister did not attend the meeting, according to what he said, to continue the interview with the President of the Government, although “he did not arrive on time either,” point out some of the members of the Spanish delegation in New York during those days. The aforementioned sources, belonging to the diplomatic career, describe the aforementioned interview with Rajoy by Bloomberg as “the finishing touch” to a bad day.

The “international media noise” caused by the journalist's questions to the president about corruption in Spain, citing the ' Bárcenas case ' on several occasions, did not benefit Spanish interests. Furthermore, information indicating that the Government had pressured the US agency not to issue some issues further aggravated the situation. International campaign to reduce the distance with Türkiye The sources consulted by ECD assure that, today, “it is very complicated” to gain the lost ground with Turkey. However, in the 11 months left until the decision on the vacancy in the Security Council, the Government's objective is to promote an international campaign to gather support. That task will not be easy, since “at this point, trips that have not been made are irrecoverable.” Furthermore, Spain's investment for this candidacy, much more austere than that made by Zapatero in the previous legislature, "will make it more difficult to close international visits of great impact ." In that sense, senior Foreign Affairs officials remember that "the last time we got a position on the Security Council, Aznar invested a lot and Josep Piqué did not stop traveling ." Now, and due to the crisis, “the scenario is different and obviously we have fewer options.”The controversy over the Erasmus scholarships, which Wert first withdrew and then recovered for the current academic year, has left the Minister of Education very touched. Senior officials of the PP blame this 'blunder' on the technocrats who have plagued the ministries, following the instructions that the party received from Brussels, and that Rajoy applied for the Executive. As El Confidencial Digital has learned , Education's decision to eliminate subsidies for Spanish university students who go abroad, and its subsequent recovery, have caused a great stir in the PP and in the ministry itself.
